BERTRAM ABBEY FELT NERVOUS and irritated, although hardly surprised, after he hung up the phone on the morning of February 2. Sherlock Holmes had called to request a meeting, and Abbey had agreed, suggesting dinner at his mansion that evening. But what exactly did the legendary detective want and, more important, what did he already know? Enlisting local authorities to cover up his activities had been easy enough for Abbey. Outwitting Sherlock Holmes would be quite another matter.

Despite his worries, Abbey believed he could handle Holmes. Abbey didn’t see how Holmes could dig up any real evidence tying him to the murders of St. Aubin and Rafferty. As for St. Aubin’s blackmailing efforts, Abbey was reasonably sure he could finesse the situation if need be. A potential sex scandal, after all, was a minor matter compared to murder, and with Grimshaw and Meeks and perhaps even the mayor himself in his corner, Abbey believed he was in no great danger. Johnny Riordan had also been taken care of—Abbey hadn’t heard from him in more than two months—and it seemed highly unlikely Holmes could have tracked him down.

Still, Abbey knew a bloodhound like Holmes, who could detect even the faintest whiff of wrongdoing, would be relentless in pursuing Rafferty’s killer. And there was always the possibility that Holmes had uncovered where he was the night Rafferty was murdered. That would require some explaining, and Abbey had rehearsed an answer just in case. Satisfied he was ready for Holmes, he went into the kitchen to discuss the dinner menu with his cook.
